CERNER CONTINUOUS CAMPUS



Perhaps one of the more prestigious projects Insco Industries, Inc. has had the pleasure on which to work is the new Cerner campus, located in Kansas City, Missouri on Bannister Road in place of the infamous ghost that was the old Bannister Mall.

The new campus will proudly boast ten “pods” made up of two connected buildings each; the first pod almost reaching completion and expected to culminate hopefully toward the end of this week. According to Painter Foreman for Insco Industries Inc., Paul Hamilton, the construction team, which consists of groups of employees from Insco Industries. Inc., J.E. Dunn, Mark One Electric, and many, many others, began work on Phase One and Phase Two of the new campus about a year ago. Phase One and Phase Two are the first two buildings connected in the first pod to be installed on the continuous campus. According to Hamilton, the team expects the project to take about ten years; roughly one year per pod.

Phase One holds 12 stories, with the 12th being a mechanical floor to keep all matter of energy in the building running. Phase Two contains nine floors, with the ninth installed for mechanical purposes as well. Each pod is projected to be constructed somewhat identically, and there is a link currently being built to connect Phases One and Two to Phases Three and Four (pod number two).

Each pod has two giant air conditioning units that power both of the phases. Additionally, there is a boiler room on the first floor of Phase One that has piping running all the way to the second building to provide energy to Phase Two. This mechanical piping was insulated by Insco Industries, Inc. and headed by Paul Pearce, Insulator Foreman, and is especially crucial to the energy operations of the two buildings.

Among some of the more novel amenities in the buildings are the gaming and library nodes located at the center of each floor. The nodes are each two stories tall and connect the center of two floors. The gaming nodes will display two-story wall graphics as well. These nodes are to be more of a break room for Cerner employees when they venture to step away from the many cubicles on floors three through eleven. Each node is supposed to facilitate a rest period for the working brain and challenge employees to engage in an alternative activity for a period of time, in hopes that it will refresh the brain for optimal work performance in the long run.

Hamilton divulged that the paint team has been ingeniously using IdeaPaint™ on some of the wall surfaces in the conference rooms, as well as on the main cubicle floors to create more of a useful space. IdeaPaint™ is dry erase paint that can be written upon over and over with markers that are erasable as well. On the main cubicle floors, clear IdeaPaint™ was painted over metal walls to create a giant, floor to ceiling dry erase board, and in some of the smaller conference rooms, white IdeaPaint™ covers the majority of one wall in each of those rooms and is painted to look like and function as a large dry erase board. Hamilton and his team also worked diligently to paint every wall in Phase One and Two, providing a different bold color for each traditional cubicle floor.

Other amenities on the new campus include a private clinic and private pharmacy for employees located in Phase Two, a fitness center with a group fitness room and locker rooms, laundry facility, rooftop patio on the third floor of each building, mega cafeteria and lobby with a giant screen TV, as well as an auditorium to encourage employee engagement, conversation, and brainstorming. The campus will also host a private daycare for children of employees, on site.

With so many different teams working on the construction of the new continuous campus, members from each team use an iPad system to stay updated on to-do lists and can check off each item as it is completed. In turn, the to-do list gets updated in real time so that all involved can stay on the same page. This ingenious use of technology helps to keep the timeline of the construction on course and create cohesiveness amongst all construction teams involved.

Pearce and Hamilton, as well as the rest of the Insco Industries, Inc. team involved in the project appeared to be excited to see the end result and to be a part of the team bringing this huge concept to fruition.

“This was a large project with a lot of great people working on it and I’m glad to have been a part of it,” said Pearce.
